As the leaves begin to turn and the weather cools, college campuses are once again a hive of activity, with students filling dorms, libraries and lecture halls across the country. College campuses can often seem like self-contained cities unto themselves, with restaurants, healthcare facilities, gyms and much more. They can also mimic cities in a less-desirable trait as well: crime. As noted in this recent Forbes Advisor article, in 2019, nearly 35,000 on-campus crimes were reported in the U.S.
While college campuses are often portrayed as idyllic locations filled with tree-lined quads, running trails and gabled outdoor walking paths, sprawling college campuses can be difficult to monitor for safety, with the current “call box” solution either providing “too much too early” or “too little too late.” Campus police, even when sufficiently staffed, are often too far removed from areas where theft or assault may be taking place.
