Ypsilanti is going electric-first for its city-operated vehicles.

The City Council voted to update its alternate fuel policy, directing staff to prioritize purchasing and using electric options for vehicles operated by the city, including cars, trucks and heavy machinery.

Staff will then investigate gas and electric hybrid vehicles if electric vehicles are found not to be a good fit for the task, the new policy states. Mainstream options like internal combustion engine vehicles that use diesel or gas are the last resort when neither hybrid nor electric vehicles options are feasible.

The policy is intended to gradually increase the percentage of electric vehicles in the city’s fleet and prioritize the replacement of older, less efficient vehicles during regular fleet renewal cycles.
