Often as I watched Star Trek with my dad, we would see characters with communicators and handheld computers. It was science fiction at its best. Then, later in the franchise, earl grey tea, cocoa, and machine parts were created by the same device.

Fiction has a funny way of becoming reality. If you doubt me, take a closer look as researchers take 3D printing to the next level and create objects with different degrees of hardness and density. No cocoa yet, but it does  remind me of a replicator. You?

Researchers at Texas University received a grant from NASA to create the next generation materials that will withstand the rigors of frequent flight that air taxis and advanced aerial vehicles will need as they become part of everyday transportation.

It sounds like more science fiction coming into fruition. I can just hear a Star Fleet Captain ordering “Enforce the hull” on the bridge of the Enterprise.
