On Wednesday, July 15th, Twitter suffered an astonishing breach of security that allowed a hacker (or hackers) access to an internal IT administrator tool used to manage accounts. Some of the notable accounts that were breached belonged to Elon Musk, President Obama, Vice President (and current presidential candidate) Joe Biden, Mike Bloomberg, Bill Gates and others. The accounts were used to send out a tweet promoting a Bitcoin scam. Because the compromised accounts belonged to high profile, verified accounts, many people thought the tweets were real. Reporting states that the perpetrator made as much as $118,000 on July 15th alone.
Twitter support posted the following tweet late on the evening of the 15th: “We detected what we believe to be a coordinated social engineering attack by people who successfully targeted some of our employees with access to internal systems and tools.”
