A Burt County farmer is using robotic weed-cutting technology to reduce pesticide use and further his use of regenerative agriculture principles.
Graham Christensen said he expects good soybean yields this year despite skipping his usual second application of pesticides.
“We’ve invested into these weed-cutting robots instead of chemicals,” Christensen said.
Four yellow robots on tracks, which Christensen named Eddie, Mike, Stone, and Jeff after members of his favorite band, Pearl Jam, spent the summer moving through fields row by row, destroying weeds.
Christensen’s a fifth-generation farmer.
“We’ve been farming since 1867,” he said. “Traditionally, historically, we’ve been involved in being on the front edge of new technology that can help the farm.”
