Autonomous field robots are often associated with arable farming, but they may also offer new opportunities for dairy producers. Dutch dairy farmer Joram Hofman is testing an AgXeed W4 autonomous robot for mowing, tedding and raking grass. Future Farming visited the farm to see how the machine fits into an already highly automated dairy operation and what role autonomous field work could play in forage production.
Whilst we take a walk around the farm, it soon becomes clear that the dairy farm is highly mechanised and, above all, highly automated. Several autonomous systems can be found in the somewhat old-looking sheds. At the front are 2 Lely A5 milking robots and at the rear of the shed there is a Trioliet feed kitchen. 2 Lely manure robots make their rounds on the slatted floors and all tractors are equipped with GPS and Isobus systems. And there is now also a new robot in the yard, the Agxeed W4, which the livestock farmer will test in cooperation with the Dutch NPPL+R.
