A new report shows that AI Data Centers are coming to the Midwest, and they could put immense amounts of stress on the Great Lakes’ water supply. The report estimates that 150 billion gallons of water must be used over the next five years in order to cool down and maintain data centers. That quantity amounts to the annual water consumption of 4.6 million households, according to the report.

Senior source water policy manager for the Alliance for the Great Lakes Helena Volzer said it is important for states to begin planning sustainable groundwater usage.

“There are already existing groundwater conflicts in some of the Great Lake states,” Volzer said.
