Over the past decade, numerous startups have raised billions to make self-driving cars a reality. Yet so far, most of these startups either have failed or remain limited.
Companies like Waymo and Cruise are confined to robotaxi use cases, operating on predefined routes and using expensive sensors and computational resources inaccessible to average consumers. Others, like Mobileye and Momenta, focus solely on advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) capabilities. Tesla seems to be an exception, remaining true to the promise of affordable autonomous vehicles everywhere; Elon Musk has asserted multiple times over the years that Tesla is on the brink of autonomous driving (AD) (while so far this promise is unrealized).
