New car registrations in the European Union rose sharply in September, driven by a surge in electric vehicle sales, industry figures showed on Thursday.
Registrations climbed 9.3% year-on-year, accelerating from a 4.5% increase in August, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA). Growth was fuelled by a 72.9% jump in battery-electric vehicle registrations. Sales of plug-in hybrids rose 11.7%, while conventional hybrid registrations increased 7.3%.
Meanwhile, registrations of diesel and petrol cars continued to decline, falling 29.6% and 23.4%, respectively.
