Toyota has confirmed that the ninth-generation Hilux, launched globally this year, will spawn a hydrogen-powered variant. The Japanese automaker claimed that the Hilux FCEV will debut in 2028 as part of the automaker’s ambitions to “develop its reputation as an innovator in the segment. While specifications remain vague for now, Toyota is targeting a driving range of 248 miles on the WLTP cycle and aims for a towing capacity of up to 5,512 lbs.
On paper, those figures would provide the Hilux FCEV with a sizeable advantage over its battery-electric sibling. The new Hilux BEV employs a 59.2 kWh battery and eAxles at the front and rear for permanent all-wheel drive, but its 160-mile (WLTP-estimated) range is notably shorter than the targets Toyota is chasing with the hydrogen version. What’s more, the 3,527-lb towing capacity of the BEV also falls some way short of the FCEV’s targeted rating.
