South Korea’s largest logistics operator announced August 6 that it will deploy autonomous freight trucks on four inter-terminal corridors inside Daegu — a 2.4-million-person city — starting in October, marking the first time any Korean logistics company has run self-driving freight vehicles through signalized intersections and mixed pedestrian traffic rather than on controlled highway routes.
The announcement, confirmed across multiple Korean news sources, covers 11.5-tonne trucks on urban routes ranging from 4.2 kilometres (2.6 miles) at the shortest to 26 kilometres (16.2 miles) at the longest within a single circuit. The move goes beyond what any other commercial freight operator has attempted at this vehicle weight class and cargo type globally: trucks carrying live parcel cargo into city intersections where autonomous systems must negotiate crosswalk timing, right-of-way, and unpredictable pedestrian behavior — conditions that no highway-proven AI has cleared at scale.
