Inside owner Leslie Delgado’s eco-friendly, fair trade gift store are imported trinkets and tubs of everything from plant-based granite and tile cleaner to lemongrass-scented laundry detergent, all used to promote waste reduction.
Delgado opened Peace of the Earth Refillery 16 years ago and moved in its current location at 2200 Dundee Road three years ago. The refillery promotes zero waste, where customers bring empty reusable containers to fill them with household and personal care items. Since opening, the store has refilled more than 15,000 containers.
The store is just one part of Delgado’s broader mission to help reduce the use of plastics in Louisville. As co-leader of Louisville’s Beyond Plastics chapter, and a partner in various local sustainability campaigns, she has worked tirelessly to reduce single-use waste for nearly two decades, work that’s become increasingly necessary as billion-dollar projects for proposed data centers pop up across the state and two Kentucky plants received temporary exemptions from being penalized for their chemical emissions under the Clean Air Act.
