Workers in West Michigan will build large-scale batteries to supplement the power grid as data centers requiring more electricity than entire cities come online in Michigan.
Utility DTE Energy has struck a $1.6 billion procurement deal for battery energy storage systems made by LG Energy Solution Vertech in Holland, company officials announced on Mackinac Island Wednesday, May 27. The batteries, to be deployed at eight undisclosed locations throughout Michigan, will be capable of capturing power at periods of excess generation and distributing it when demand peaks.
“As a Michigan-based company, we know how vital it is to put dollars into the hands of our local companies as we actively build the grid of the future,” DTE’s CEO Joi Harris said at a press conference held during the Mackinac Policy Conference.
The 1.5 gigawatts of battery storage systems included in the deal are a key piece of DTE’s plan to serve a massive artificial intelligence data center for ChatGPT creator OpenAI and tech giant Oracle now being built in Saline Township, south of Ann Arbor.
