Oklahoma officials said fully autonomous commercial motor vehicles could begin appearing on state highways soon, as the technology continues to advance and freight movement grows nationwide. The effort is being led by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, which are coordinating with industry partners to ensure responsible deployment.
Oklahoma established the legal framework for autonomous vehicle operations in 2019, with more legislation in 2022 allowing fully autonomous commercial motor vehicles to operate without a human driver when federal safety standards and state traffic laws are met.
