On April 23, 2026, many sustainability leaders joined Detroit’s Mayor’s Office of Mobility Innovation to celebrate zero emission technology and the winners of the Toyota Mobility Foundation’s Sustainable Cities Challenge at Eastern Market. The challenge focused on demonstrating clean freight solutions in the Eastern Market, the cornerstone of Detroit’s food economy and a thriving commercial hub.
Among the three distinguished sustainable energy companies were two from Detroit: Electric Fish, specializing in fast EV charging, and Civilized Cycles, which offers a light electric cargo vehicle. The third winner, Neology, hailing from Geneva, Switzerland, focuses on developing power systems that can produce hydrogen and electricity independently and operates from NewLab in Detroit. The winners will share $1.5 million in implementation funding to scale solutions in Detroit.
Selected as the only city in the Western Hemisphere among over 200 global contenders, Detroit won $3 million, supplemented by $400,000 from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Office of Future Mobility and Electrification (OFME), to enhance project impact.

Mayor Mary Sheffield announced the recipients at Eastern Market Shed 5 during the Cities Today Institute’s final day, which gathered mobility and community leaders. Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield said, “Big ideas in clean freight technology have found their home in Detroit. This means cleaner air and a brighter future for residents.”
Vince Keenan, Head of Engagement Innovation, City of Detroit’s Office of Mobility Innovation, said, “The Mayor’s Office of Mobility Innovation is designed to push big ideas…”
The event also showcased zero-emission technologies from major industry players including Ricardo, Toyota, and AT&T, emphasizing Detroit’s critical role in advancing clean freight solutions and zero-emission innovations and good data.
What a great day.
