When the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1 in 1957, the United States responded by investing in rocketry and education.

As evidenced by the National Defense Education Act (NDEA) of 1958, science, mathematics and foreign languages quickly became national priorities. Classrooms across the country shifted course to build a generation capable of competing at the highest levels of scientific and technological achievement. We ended up developing the people needed to design, build, and sustain technology.

Today, NASA’s Artemis program represents a similarly ambitious effort, with a new generation of rockets, spacecraft, and plans for a sustained human presence beyond Earth.
