The Russia-Ukraine War has rapidly accelerated the use of military robots, as both sides field new technologies to gain an edge over their adversaries. As Russia and Ukraine employ larger numbers of uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) and uncrewed ground vehicles (UGVs), these systems are increasingly coming into direct engagement with one another. This dynamic has been visible at the strategic level for more than a year, as Ukrainian interceptor drones have tracked and destroyed Russian Gerans. More recently, UAVs and UGVs have also begun engaging other robotic systems at the tactical level. In particular, the “kill zones” extending in front of Ukrainian defensive lines are becoming arenas where robotic systems fight one another.

Robots Take Over The Kill Zones

These kill zones have become the defining feature of the current phase of the war and effectively function as a modern-day no-man’s land. They extend several kilometers ahead of Ukrainian defensive lines and are heavily patrolled by UAVs searching for and targeting adversaries.
