I was born, raised, married, had children, and lived in Detroit. I am a major Detroit booster and Great Lakes protector and champion. I have camped on the edge of Lake Huron every summer for 45 years. One of my favorite things to do is show newbies a Great Lake. Their common response: “no way — that’s an ocean!”

So, you can imagine how my hackles go up when water issues hit the news. Oil spills, chemical discharges, accidental sewage expulsions, and general pollution drive me crazy. Now there is something new to worry about as data centers set their sights on Michigan as an endless supply of cooling fluid,

So…… my favorite article of interest this week is the tiny AI brain that Ben Cowley, author of the study and an assistant professor at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, introduces to us. He and his associates and researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and Princeton University created a tiny AI model that just may allow me to relax about “my” Great Lakes and the potential danger of energy-guzzling AI systems. I really love progress.
