In an effort to retain engineering staff from a $170 million project for NASA, the University of Iowa is renovating the seventh floor of Van Allen Hall to house the Iowa Spaceflight Laboratory, a collection of labs supporting the UI’s efforts in building spaceflight instrumentation for solar system exploration.

The laboratory is funded by $7.2 million in UI funds invested by the Provost Office and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and a $670,000 grant from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust, Gregory Howes, departmental executive officer of UI’s physics and astronomy department, said.

Howes said construction on the seventh floor of Van Allen will be completed between as early as spring break to late March.
