Authorities in China are rolling out AI-driven robot cops that stand nearly six feet tall and are rigged with high-definition cameras and sophisticated sensors.

One robot, which appears to be a female cop, is patrolling Wuhan’s streets. Designated R001, the robots are to monitor and direct both car and pedestrian traffic.

Similar robotic officers have been deployed across other Chinese cities, including Chengdu, Hangzhou, and Shanghai.

A police instructor explains that these robots function alongside human traffic personnel, or can operate independently by connecting to traffic signal systems. While the robocops aren’t built for speed or intimidation, they represent a crucial element in China’s broader plan to showcase its robotics capabilities and normalize the presence of machines in everyday society.
