As the largest gift ever to a facility at MSU, this monumental investment propels the university’s vision for a state-of-the-art hub that unites digital learning, advanced research, entrepreneurship and industry. Naming of the Leinweber Center for Engineering and Digital Innovation is pending approval by the Michigan State University Board of Trustees at its February 6 meeting.
The new center is expected to be located at the southwest corner of Red Cedar Road and and West Shaw Lane, near the College of Engineering Building and STEM Teaching and Learning Facility. Construction on the project was originally approved during the Oct. 31 Board of Trustees meeting.
“We are profoundly grateful to the Leinweber Foundation for this extraordinary commitment,” MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz said in a statement. “It represents far more than an investment in a building — it is an investment in people, in opportunity and in Michigan’s future. This investment will help us educate the next generation of engineers, scientists and innovators whose work will define the future economy of the state of Michigan and beyond. We are honored by the Leinweber family’s belief in MSU and grateful for their partnership in advancing our mission as a leading global research university.”
Expected to be complete by December 2028, the 265,000-square-foot facility will have dedicated spaces for digital learning with active classrooms, teaching laboratories, student project studios and a home for e-sports. There will be dedicated spaces for experimental and computational research as well, and will enable the enrollment of 1,000 new engineering students, according to a statement from university officials.
