The Society of Plastics Engineers’ Automotive Division is honoring a classic piece of safety this year for entry into the Hall of Fame: the seat belt.

It may be hard to believe, but in the 42-year history of the Automotive Innovation Awards’ Hall of Fame, SPE hadn’t made it to the seat belt. (The airbag was honored in 2012.)

The first applicationĀ of a seat belt was a simple lap belt installed on the 1949 Nash Motor Airflyte and Ambassador models.

“Since that time, millions of vehicles have used nylon and polyester enabling improvements in mass production, automotive and comfort and, most importantly, safety,” SPE said in announcing the 2025 winner.
