Getting your car stolen is something no one should have to experience. According to the NICB (National Insurance Crime Bureau), the number auto thefts are decreasing, but there were still nearly 1 million auto thefts in 2024. There are many lists of what vehicles get stolen the most and there is a common trend among them, you rarely see EVs mentioned in the data. There are a few reasons why you don’t hear about electric cars being stolen compared to internal combustion vehicles.

Some cars are easier to steal then others, EVs are not one of them.

According to the IIHS (Insurance Insitute for Highway Safety) and the HLDI (Highway Loss Data Institute), “the 20 least-stolen vehicles include eight electric vehicles and two plug-in hybrids, all of which have whole-vehicle theft claim frequencies that are more than 85% lower than the all-vehicle average. As past HLDI studies have noted, electric vehicles are likely to be garaged or parked near buildings to facilitate charging, making them less attractive to thieves.”
