Driven by increased electrification of the transportation sector and artificial intelligence data centers, U.S. electricity demand is expected to grow by as much as 50% by 2040, according to the American Clean Power Association. Modular, battery-based electricity microgrids are less complicated and more cost effective to build than full-scale power plants, helping to meet demand.
General Motors has been making electric vehicles since 2010 when it first introduced the Chevrolet Volt and is currently second only to Tesla in U.S. EV sales. Chief Executive Mary Barra has said she plans for the company to phase out gas-powered vehicles by 2035.
GM is one of the largest auto makers in the world. In 2024, it sold 6 million vehicles globally — about 14% of which were electric. As EV adoption grows, it will eventually create a pipeline of used batteries that can no longer propel a vehicle but can be repurposed as energy storage.
