South Africa has broken ground on an ambitious smart city project named Westown, a multi-million-dollar development aimed at reshaping urban life in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, according to a recent report from CoinGeek.
The project, which began its first phase of construction earlier this year, is expected to be completed within 15 years, with a price tag of R15 billion ($805 million). Westown represents one of South Africa’s biggest efforts to create “smart city” spaces on a large scale. The country has seen previous attempts to build tech-centric urban hubs, such as the Lanseria Smart City near Johannesburg, but many of these projects stalled or were abandoned.
