Mountain bicyclists may soon have some company on trails across Michigan: riders on electric bicycles.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has proposed opening state park trails currently off-limits to e-bikes. Class 1 e-bikes, already allowed on paved or asphalt trails, would be allowed on dirt trails, while Class 2 e-bikes would be allowed on unpaved and paved trails, as long as the rider has an impairment and a permit from the DNR. The trails in question must already be open to cyclists.

The DNR is taking input from the public this month.
