A global high-tech company has chosen a Michigan city as the site for its new electric vehicle battery manufacturing facility, and is investing billions of dollars into the project.
Gotion — a China-based company that was incorporated in California — is investing $2.36 billion to build a battery component manufacturing facility in Big Rapids, which is just west of Mount Pleasant. The plan is to build two 550,000 square foot plants, in addition to other “supporting facilities,” on a site spanning approximately 260 acres.
Michigan officials announced the investment Wednesday, saying the project will create up to 2,350 jobs.
The Michigan Strategic Fund, which is part of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, approved a package of “incentive support” on Wednesday, Oct. 5, in an effort to attract Gotion’s investment. The state was reportedly competing against Illinois, Ohio, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina and Texas to host the manufacturing facility.
