In the past few decades, the semiconductor industry has been a key contributor to our economy. The latest statistics from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) indicate that global semiconductor industry sales totaled $555.9 billion in 2021.
In addition to the direct impact on our economy, the semiconductor industry is the key engine that powers all information technology fields, including personal computing, mobile computing, cloud computing and so on. Therefore, the semiconductor industry has a much deeper and broader impact on our modern economy.
Looking back at information technology history, personal computing has been mainly powered by affordable microprocessors designed and manufactured by companies such as IBM, Apple and Intel. Mobile computing has been mainly powered by system-on-chips designed by Apple, Qualcomm, Broadcom and Samsung. Cloud computing has been mainly powered by server processors designed by Intel, AMD, Nvidia and, more recently, Google’s TPU.
