A woman from Mansfield had her bladder removed by a robotic arm during a seven-hour operation in what was a first for surgeons at the NHS trust which runs Queen’s Medical Centre and City Hospital.
The 67-year-old woman had a cystectomy, an operation to remove part or all of a bladder, at City Hospital on February 10.
The procedure itself involved a surgeon guiding the arms of the robot remotely to perform delicate keyhole surgery.
Cystectomies are usually an option for patients where bladder cancer has started to become invasive.
The robot used is called the Da Vinci Robot and is based at City Hospital in Nottingham.
