We’re on the cusp of a real 5G breakthrough. For one, coverage is increasing. By the end of 2021, 5G mobile subscriptions are estimated to total over 580 million. By 2026, this is anticipated to jump to 3.5 billion subscriptions.
Connectivity is also increasing. Countries are multiplying their average download speeds with 5G. In February 2021, a report from Open Signal showed South Korea leading average 5G download speeds worldwide at 354.4 Mbps, 5.6 times faster than its average download speeds with 4G. Thailand and the Philippines reported increases of 13.4 times (up to 162.3 Mbps) and 10.1 times (up to 117.2 Mbps), respectively. Qualcomm’s latest 5G processors, launched in February 2021, are predicted to enable download speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second. Of course, this is just the beginning. Speeds are expected to increase as the 5G infrastructure develops.
