Boris Johnson won plaudits from environmental campaigners with his move to bring forward a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2040 to 2030.
But although the move will accelerate the UK’s journey to net zero emissions, it presents an enormous challenge for the car industry.
While sales are growing fast, currently only around 12 per cent of cars sold in the UK every year charge via a plug point. Pushing those sales up depends on convincing wary drivers they won’t end up stuck in the middle of nowhere with a flat battery.
