Around the world, the appetite for seafood continues to grow. Per-capita consumption of fish products has gone from 22 pounds annually in the 1960s to more than 46 pounds today. With marine environments under increasing pressure and wild fisheries unable to satisfy the needs of growing populations, fish farms have become an essential part of the global food supply chain. Aquaculture now supplies more than half of the world’s seafood and is helping reduce reliance on wild fish stocks while improving food security and nutrition.
“AI is revolutionizing aquaculture and making possible a new level of competitiveness,” says ABB’s Chief Digital Officer Guido Jouret. “It’s giving us better ways to monitor fish health and performance, letting us optimize processes so we can minimize environmental impact, cutting costs by automating routine operations and speeding up decision making with the help of outputs from cognitive technologies.”
