The journey of Amazon’s robotics division began in 2012 with the acquisition of Kiva Systems for $775 million. The early robots, designed by Kiva, primarily followed barcode markers on the warehouse floor to navigate and transport items.
However, over a decade later, Amazon’s robotics have evolved with technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, resulting in more advanced robots like Proteus, a fully autonomous system that moves seamlessly alongside workers. Proteus, which was introduced in 2022 at the Nashville fulfillment center, is reportedly capable of navigating obstacles and transporting packages without needing to be confined to specific areas of the warehouse.
