Automated transit is coming to the residents of Sun City, Arizona. Starting today, May Mobility is offering rides in what they call “the first on-demand public transit service using AVs in Arizona.” Located northwest of Phoenix, the retirement community’s residents will access these mobility services with an app and back-end software provided by Via.
Founded in 2017, May Mobility’s mission is to provide lower-cost public transportation with its self-driving vehicles. Unlike robotaxis operated by a service provider, May Mobility contracts with various municipalities as an on-demand microtransit provider, transporting up to five riders at a time and can handle a rider in a wheelchair.
“Safe, Reliable, and Equitable”
May Mobility says the goal of the deployment is to use AVs to expand access to “safe, reliable, and equitable” on-demand transportation to Sun City, a community designed for adults age 55 and older. The company also aims to understand how its technology is adopted and addresses mobility challenges faced by aging adults.
