The gym at Pasteur Elementary School was bursting with energy as fifth- and sixth-graders raced to the tables set up in the center of the room to sort through a pile of Legos. A group of kids were reaching over each other, talking excitedly while searching for tires or long, skinny blocks to start their project.

For many of the 57 students, the task was one they’ve never tried before: building a robot.

Toy shop and educational center, The Robot Garage, hosted the event last week at the elementary school on Detroit’s west side.

The Birmingham-based Robot Garage works with hundreds of schools each year, teaching students how to build a robot through Legos, then letting them split off into teams to design them.

Lastly, teams are able to see who has the better robot during two robotics tournaments.
