The last portion of any project is usually the bit that takes the most time and expertise. You have plodded your way through the things that had easy answers even if they were technically complicated. It is generally impossible to calculate the remaining work load based on the resolved portion. If you dare an estimate it is usually seen best from a rear view mirror. I truly believe this to be true about most creative endeavors and the fact that the human race keeps plodding along in this never ending race to improve on our lot shows dogged determination.
When the self driving press wheel started spinning, the prediction was that I would find myself reading a book while being whisked to my destination of choice some time this Fall. I was skeptical. My skepticism was fed when I spoke with family members in the auto industry that mentioned the simple frustration with slush and ice on the sensors meant to safely navigate my ride. I had a clear vision of myself kicking the ice pack from inside and behind my tire well to improve my steering ability. Hmmm I thought, is this a warm climate only possibility.
The New York Times article “Despite High Hopes, Self-Driving Cars Are ‘Way in the Future” is a reality check to all the hype of the last few years. In the undying pursuit of advancement no one is throwing in the towel. Calendars are being realigned and rear view mirrors are being checked as progress continues.
We may still be in the failure mode of the ultimate expectation, but that is true of every invention that human kind has ever perceived. You fail to you don’t and then you succeed.
